Our renovation work on the circular stair in the Harrell Health Sciences Library at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine is a clear example of how practical safety enhancements can also become bold design statements.
The original 1968 cast-in-place concrete staircase had become a safety concern due to fall hazards associated with its open structure. The university turned to KBM Industries for an attractive, code-compliant solution that would not only address these issues but also bring new life to a high-traffic area of the library.
Our team fabricated forty-one custom 11-gauge steel panels, each laser-cut to precise dimensions and rolled to follow the curve of the existing stair. After fabrication, every panel was sandblasted and finished with a durable powder coat, chosen for its longevity and low maintenance in a high-use academic environment.
To maintain accuracy and consistency during installation, KBM engineered and machined custom drilling jigs that ensured uniform bolt patterns across all connections. The panels were then installed using aluminum standoffs and stainless steel sex bolts—hardware choices that added modern flair and a clean, finished aesthetic.
The result is a visually striking circular stair that has been transformed from a dated, dimly lit feature into a focal point of the Harrell Health Sciences Library. The steel panel system enhances both safety and appearance, providing a contemporary update that respects the integrity of the original structure while vastly improving its functionality and appeal.
