University of Scranton Pedestrian Commons

Our work on the University of Scranton Pedestrian Commons exemplifies this philosophy through a project that was executed in two distinct phases over two years.

The University sought to enhance its pedestrian commons with custom-fabricated railings and signage that would not only serve a functional purpose but also reflect the institution’s attention to detail and commitment to a unified campus aesthetic. Working closely with the design team, KBM Industries fabricated a series of railings that marry strength and elegance—constructed from structural tube, bar stock, and capped with ornamental detailing. The centerpiece of the design is a distinctive braided ring motif, a signature KBM detail that introduces movement and visual interest throughout the railing system.

In addition to the railings, the project also included a large architectural sign that marks the space with bold presence and thoughtful execution. The sign was crafted from 10-gauge steel plate and a variety of rolled tube sizes, precisely bent and assembled to achieve the desired form and proportions. Every piece was fabricated in-house at our Harrisburg facility, where precision and quality control are the cornerstones of our process.

After fabrication, all components—both railing and signage—underwent a rigorous three-stage finishing process. First, the steel was sandblasted to ensure proper surface preparation. Next, a zinc-rich primer was applied to maximize corrosion resistance. Finally, a gloss black powder coat was added to provide a durable, high-contrast finish that can stand up to the elements while maintaining its striking appearance.

This project is a clear demonstration of KBM’s ability to deliver on both architectural intent and structural reliability.
