Unity Park Memorial

Custom Fabricated Ornamental Benches - Gettysburg, PA

In the heart of historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a unique monument now stands that honors a lesser-known but vital part of Civil War history—the drum corps. Unity Park Memorial is the first national monument dedicated specifically to these young boys, who served as communicators, morale boosters, and battlefield companions during one of America’s most defining conflicts. This powerful project was initiated by Andrew Adam, an Eagle Scout with a deep appreciation for history and a vision for healing through remembrance.

When Andrew first approached KBM Industries, he didn’t come with a formal proposal—he came with a Lego model. His hands-on prototype laid the foundation for a thoughtful collaboration between himself, KBM Industries for their custom metal fabrication services, and Pyramid Construction Services who joined as the site contractor. KBM Industries, known for its expertise in precision metal fabrication, was immediately drawn to the purpose and symbolism behind the memorial. We committed both in-kind and financial support, helping transform a young man’s idea into a national landmark.

KBM’s contribution centered on the fabrication of four custom ornamental benches, designed to symbolize unity between the Union and the Confederacy. The bench ends were forged from 1" x 2" steel bars sourced from the North and finished in "Union blue." These pieces were sandblasted, primed with zinc, and finished with a durable powder coat for longevity. The slats of the bench, made from composite lumber sourced from the South, were chosen in a "Confederate gray" tone to mirror the visual identity of the Southern army. As a finishing detail, brass belt buckles—one Union, one Confederate—were inlaid at the top of each seat. These benches are not only beautiful, functional pieces of craftsmanship but also enduring metaphors for reconciliation.

The collaborative nature of the project extended well beyond custom metal fabrication. With guidance from KBM and the support of Pyramid Construction Services, Andrew was able to manage a complex site build that adhered to local regulations, historical sensitivity, and the expectations of the National Park community. The memorial’s location in Gettysburg—a town that symbolizes both the height of division and the beginning of national healing—makes it an especially poignant setting for this tribute.

Unity Park is now a space for reflection and education, inviting visitors to consider the shared experiences of those who lived through the Civil War, regardless of side. For KBM Industries, the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful public space was an honor. Projects like these underscore the company’s commitment not only to quality craftsmanship but also to supporting community initiatives that foster understanding, connection, and pride.

Andrew Adam’s words best capture the spirit of this partnership:

“KBM Industries, specifically Mark Burket, played a truly essential role in my Eagle Scout Project and its community outreach. Thanks to the generosity of their in-kind and monetary donations, we created a keystone component of the project that all visitors benefit from. Not only did KBM leverage expertise and professionalism, but they were very flexible in how the project was completed from start to finish. Couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

From a Lego model to a national monument, the Unity Park Memorial exemplifies what’s possible when dedication, vision, and craftsmanship come together. KBM Industries is proud to have played a role in shaping this powerful space of remembrance and unity.
